The Roles of Admins on ABC Island

These are some notes from me about the ABC admin group. They are just from my own understanding, but I hope they inform your thinking about next week’s meeting. I’m unlikely to be around then because I’m moving the following weekend, but I’ll do my best.
Thanks to Shai for organising the meetings, I think they are pushing things in the right direction
It would be great if we could get these administrative things clarified for the new Coordinator, and focus on creating new and exciting things we want to be involved in on the Island. Juko
I think two areas need discussion and clarification:
1. the specific abilities that the role of ABC Friend Admins has in the ABC Admin Group settings, and whether we think these are appropriate and sufficient. We should consider whether additional roles would help to clarify responsibilities and encourage participation, and present suggestions to ABC Staff.
2. the guidelines for admins on:
a. the expectations of the ABC
b. the requirements admins see as necessary to keep the sim free from grief, and tools we use
c. the types of activities admins might participate in or manage – for and with the ABC Friends group
d. communication channels (notices, chat, admin tools, blog, reports).
There should also be procedures for adding and removing members, and reporting to the ABC, but these might be the domain of the new Coordinator, who could let us know what was required.
Expectations of the ABC have been set out in a Guidelines notecard, but this needs review and expansion.
Dealing with griefers is an important task for admins, but only one of many tasks admins might want to do. Clear rules and details on how to respond to griefers and appropriate action, including banning and reinstatement, should be agreed and followed.
There are also two tools for admins, in the Sandbox entrance area. One allows admins to register for anyone to see which admins are online. The other is a box where notecards can be placed with details of griefer incidents, for the information of other admins. The use of these tools should be discussed and included in new admin orientation if required.
Other tasks admins might carry out (or coordinate with ABC Friends) include aspects of event management, blog moderation, liaison with other groups, teaching classes, assisting newbies and providing resources for them, building new tools and creating new content for the Island.
It should go without saying that any ABC Friends can and do get together for spontaneous activities in the many spaces available on the Island, almost any time.
However, group project and more organised events which have been run successfully have used a simple procedure which could be used as the basis for new event planning:
a. use ABC Admin group Notices to suggest an event and get feedback from other admins
b. provide an outline of the event to ABC for approval and timing check
c. provide text of Notices to ABC Staff to send to the ABC Friends group
d. discuss with ABC Staff and request any changes needed to venues
e. work with admin group and interested Friends to plan and set up the event – finalise builds and timing
f. post Event on secondlife.com, put up signs around the sim, promote to other groups
g. host the event
g. report to ABC Staff on attendance and feedback
For reference, the ABC Friend Admin role has the following abilities – those marked with * are inherited from Everyone. In addition, parcels on the sim have been set to allow the group to build outside the sandbox.
Parcel Powers
Always allow fly
Always allow create landmark
Always allow set home to here on group land *

Manage parcel Ban lists
Eject and freeze Residents on parcels

“I think they are pushing things in the right direction”
To be honest, I’m not sure of that… in fact it served to make a few of us even grumpier than usual, including yours truely.
But I also hope, once all the “gas and wind” has blown away, we’ll be left with something which is useful.

I have added a topic to the Forums for the Event Guidelines included above, with a suggestion for further discussion to go there
